A letter from a client living with Chronic Pain:
As an individual living with chronic back and neck pain I have experienced many aspects of its’ nature and treatment. There is so little understanding about chronic pain and those that experience chronic pain are often stereotyped as ‘lazy’ and ‘weak’ and hypochondriacs. There seems to be a lack of recognition regarding the true nature of chronic pain, particularly the unrelenting, unmeasurable suffering. In regard to our daily lives we experience great losses because we cannot function as we would like to, as others take for granted.
Our ability to cultivate and maintain friendship is seriously compromised and our ability to participate in social, cultural and religious activities is somewhat diminished. Chronic pain has an enormous impact on our families and partners, it effects our sex lives and the way we care for our children.
I recently attended a very good pain program by Ilan Cohen which has taught me techniques to help manage chronic pain. I have learned skills and methods that help manage my life more effectively. This program has helped me realise that I am not alone in suffering as there are many others who suffer as we do. We all need to recognise how pain corrodes the spirit and the fabric of our lives. Ilan helped me to live beyond pain and I also suggest you read his book which I could easily relate to. Thank you Ilan!
